Few things are more important to a good life than nutrition, but sadly Aotearoa shows up some pretty sombre statistics when it comes to nutrition and health — but that’s something we can change.
We rank third highest amongst OECD countries for adult obesity, we are experiencing an epidemic of diabetes and heart disease remains our nation’s biggest killer, with someone dying from cardiovascular disease every 90 minutes.
These are huge problems for our country, but they aren’t insurmountable. In fact, one of the most effective preventative measures for all of these diseases is something we should all already be doing — eating a healthy diet.
There is an overwhelming amount of peer reviewed scientific evidence suggesting a vegan diet can effectively fight all three of these health scourges, along with reducing the risk of certain cancers, relieving arthritis pain, improving bone health, and combating several sexual disfunctions.
Here at the Vegan Society of Aotearoa know we are preaching to the choir — our members have opted to walk the plant-based path and already benefit from increased health and vitality of a vegan lifestyle — but Nutrition Month is the perfect time to take stock of your health, ensure you are eating a balanced diet, and perhaps cutting out any bad habits you’ve been meaning to deal with.
More importantly, it’s almost certain someone you love or care about in your life is not currently eating as well as they should, and we want to encourage you to give them a gentle push towards a longer, happier life for Nutrition Month — and we’ve devised the perfect resource to help.
The 21 Day Easy Vegan New Zealand Challenge is a free email-based programme that challenges users to eat a healthy, whole food, plant-based diet for 21 days and experience the revitalising effects of a vegan lifestyle firsthand.
Every day users will receive messages in their inbox full of recipe ideas for vegan-ised Kiwi classics, animal-free product suggestions that are available in local stores, tips for eating out with non-vegans, and motivational advice from prominent locals who have made the healthy plant-based choice too.
